Telangana activists urge election authorities to ensure transparency in SIR notices, Form 7 objections and voter deletion proceedings.

Hyderabad: Civil society groups and activists have urged election authorities to ensure greater transparency in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana.

A group of 17 activists and organisations has asked the Election Commission, Telangana CEO and District Election Officers to closely monitor Forms 6, 7 and 8 and prevent eligible voters from being removed based on unverified objections.

The group has also sought at least seven days’ notice before hearings, proper receipts for submitted documents and written reasons for rejecting voter claims. It opposed notices issued over minor differences in names and ages, arguing that some discrepancies could have originated from earlier data-entry and translation errors.

Activists further called for stricter scrutiny of Form 7 deletion requests and transparent hearings by EROs and AEROs. They warned that procedural lapses could disproportionately affect vulnerable voters who face difficulties producing documents.

Analysis: With the SIR exercise involving a large number of electoral records, transparent verification will be crucial to maintaining public confidence. Clear notices, adequate hearing time and documented decisions can help prevent genuine voters from being excluded.
