Telangana Phone-Tapping Probe Nears Political Summons as SIT Steps Up Action
Telangana phone-tapping case intensifies as SIT plans notices to KCR and Harish Rao, with reinvestigation and more political summons likely soon.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged phone-tapping scandal in Telangana is preparing to issue notices to senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders, including party chief K. Chandrashekar Rao and Siddipet MLA T. Harish Rao, sources indicated on Monday.
Before formally summoning the political figures, investigators are expected to once again question P. Rajashekar Reddy, who served as Officer on Special Duty to KCR during his tenure as chief minister. The SIT has already examined former chief secretary Somesh Kumar and ex-intelligence chief Naveen Chand as part of the widening inquiry.
The case gained momentum after the Congress came to power in the 2023 Assembly elections, following allegations that an SIT under the previous BRS government had carried out unauthorised surveillance on politicians, judges and other prominent individuals. The complaint also claims that digital evidence was destroyed to cover up the operation.
Recently, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar announced the formation of a fresh nine-member SIT to accelerate the investigation and ensure early filing of the charge sheet. Officials hint that more political leaders could be summoned as the probe advances.
The likelihood of notices to top BRS leaders marks a critical phase in the investigation and could have significant political repercussions in Telangana. How swiftly and transparently the SIT proceeds may shape public confidence in the state’s commitment to accountability after a change in government.
