Telangana Local Body Polls Expected in December After Cabinet Discussion

Local body elections in Telangana are likely to take place in December, following deliberations during Monday’s cabinet meeting, according to media reports. The government is expected to conduct the polls in phases, starting with sarpanch elections, followed by MPTC and ZPTC notifications.

As per reports, the state will first observe ‘Praja Palana Week’ from December 1 to 9, after which the election process is likely to commence. The polls had been postponed earlier when the Telangana High Court issued an interim stay on the government’s decision to increase reservation for Backward Classes to 42 percent, citing violation of the 50% cap.

With the stay forcing the cancellation of previous notifications, the cabinet’s latest move signals a return to electoral preparations. Analysts say the timing of the elections will be crucial for the ruling party to consolidate rural support ahead of major civic and national polls.

While legal constraints on quota allocation still apply, the resumption of the poll schedule may help restore local governance structures, many of which have faced administrative delays due to the absence of elected representatives.
