Telangana Govt’s Bonus for Singareni Workers: Real Relief or Political Gimmick?
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy announced a Rs 1.90 lakh bonus for Singareni workers, but thee question if this is genuine welfare or just festive politics.
The Telangana government has announced a Dussehra bonus for Singareni Collieries workers, with each permanent worker set to receive ₹1.90 lakh and contract workers ₹5,000. While Chief Minister Revanth Reddy praised the workers’ role in Telangana’s movement and claimed the bonus comes from company profits, many view this as a political strategy rather than genuine welfare.
The Singareni Collieries Company Limited reported a profit of ₹4,701 crore in 2023–24. From this, nearly ₹800 crore is being spent on bonuses. Critics argue that while expansion plans and promises of hospitals and schools are highlighted, contract workers—who form the backbone of coal operations are given only a token amount.
Questions are also being raised about whether this yearly “bonus announcement” is sustainable or simply a way to gain goodwill during festive times. True worker welfare, experts say, requires long-term benefits like better healthcare, housing, and equal treatment for contract staff—not just seasonal cash handouts.
