Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy reviews Kaleshwaram barrage restoration; testing and repair costs to be covered by original contractors after structural failures under BRS rule.

Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Wednesday reviewed the ongoing restoration of the Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla barrages — key components of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project that suffered structural damage during the previous BRS administration. The government, he said, is working closely with the Central Water Commission to ensure the revival of the barrages through scientific and transparent methods.

Reddy blamed the earlier regime for “reckless decisions and engineering lapses” that led to the failure of the multicrore project. He confirmed that all repair and testing costs will be recovered from the original contractors responsible for the construction. Investigations and design guidance will be handled by the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) once floodwaters subside.

The minister also reviewed progress on other key irrigation projects, including Sammakka Sagar and Seethamma Sagar, highlighting the Congress government’s focus on accountability and scientific planning in water infrastructure.

Analysis: The move signals a shift toward accountability and scientific oversight in Telangana’s irrigation policy. Experts believe this could help rebuild public confidence in large-scale projects that were once tainted by allegations of corruption and poor execution.
