Telangana Deputy CM Seeks Justice in Dalit IPS Officer’s Suicide Case
Telangana Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka visits the family of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar in Chandigarh, demanding legal action against senior officers named in the suicide note alleging caste-based harassment.
Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Monday met the grieving family of senior Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide last week, sparking outrage over caste discrimination within the police ranks.
During his visit to Chandigarh, Vikramarka consoled Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, and assured the family of Telangana’s full support. He also connected them with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who expressed condolences and promised to extend any assistance needed.
Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer and alumnus of Osmania University and IIM Ahmedabad, was found dead at his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh on October 7. His eight-page note reportedly accused eight senior IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, of harassment and attempts to tarnish his reputation.
Vikramarka, after meeting Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, urged immediate legal action against those named in the note. “This document must be treated as a dying declaration,” he asserted, condemning the “deeply entrenched caste-based bias” that allegedly drove the officer to despair.
He further criticized the Haryana government for inaction even days after the incident, calling the promotion of officers with an “anti-Dalit mindset” to top ranks unacceptable.
The case has reignited discussions on institutional discrimination in law enforcement and the urgent need for accountability. Activists say this tragedy underscores why mental health and social equity reforms within the police force cannot wait.
