In just 10 days, Telangana transport officials seized 3,420 vehicles and filed 4,748 violation cases as part of a new road safety enforcement campaign. Teams to conduct surprise checks; refresher training for heavy vehicle drivers planned.

To curb the rise in road accidents, Telangana’s transport department has launched an intensive enforcement initiative across the state. During a recent review, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed that 33 district-level monitoring units along with three state-level flying squads have been to set up to boost road safety efforts.

Within the first 10 days of the operation, officials reportedly booked 4,748 cases for various transport violations and seized 3,420 vehicles. The department has decided to conduct daily surprise inspections, with checking points disclosed to officers only at 6 am to maintain confidentiality during operations.

In addition, drivers of heavy motor vehicles will undergo refresher safety training, and strict coordination has been planned between transport and mining departments to prevent overloading at the source. Officials confirmed that vehicles carrying excess load will be confiscated and repeat offenders risk cancellation of permits and driving licences. An action plan for Road Safety Month scheduled in January is also being prepared.

Analysis: Such decisive action sends a strong message to habitual violators and could significantly improve road discipline if enforcement remains consistent. Local commuters may experience temporary delays due to inspections, but long-term benefits in terms of reduced accidents justify the inconvenience. Authorities should also intensify public awareness campaigns to encourage safe driving practices, especially among commercial operators.
