Telangana Assembly Suspends BRS MLAs Amid Protests Over Mining Allegations
BRS legislators suspended till session end after protests in Telangana Assembly over alleged illegal mining; House passes motion for action.
High drama unfolded in the Telangana Assembly on Sunday as members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) were suspended till the end of the ongoing session following continuous disruptions over alleged illegal mining issues.
The protest erupted with BRS legislators gathering near the podium, demanding the تشكيل of a House Committee to probe allegations linked to Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy. Despite repeated appeals from the Speaker to return to their seats, the agitation continued, stalling proceedings.
Amid the impasse, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy suggested disciplinary action, stating that the House must function without disruption. Following this, a motion was moved and passed to suspend the protesting BRS members for the remainder of the session.
The ruling Congress also objected to the conduct of BRS MLA P. Kaushik Reddy, with the matter referred to the Assembly’s ethics committee for further examination.
During the debate, the Chief Minister said the government was open to constituting a House Committee but also raised counter-allegations against BRS leaders regarding land transactions during their tenure. He reiterated that an inquiry into mining leases since the formation of Telangana was already underway.
The episode reflects escalating tensions between the ruling party and the Opposition, with legislative business frequently disrupted by political confrontations. Such standoffs not only delay policymaking but also highlight the growing importance of procedural discipline in ensuring effective governance.
