With Supreme Court pressure mounting, Telangana Speaker asks MLAs Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari to submit affidavits immediately in ongoing defection case.

Telangana Speaker Pushes Action in Defection Case, Sends Notices to Nagender & Srihari

In a significant development surrounding the MLA defection controversy, Telangana Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar has issued fresh notices to MLAs Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari, seeking immediate submission of their affidavits.

The move follows the completion of hearings for the other eight MLAs on November 20, all of whom had defected from the BRS to the ruling Congress shortly after the 2023 Assembly elections. Nagender and Srihari had earlier requested additional time.

Supreme Court Pressure Speeds Up Process

The action comes just days after the Supreme Court reprimanded the Speaker for delaying his decision on the disqualification petitions. The court warned that unless the matter was settled within a week, the Speaker could face contempt of court proceedings.

The apex court had earlier, on July 31, directed the Speaker to decide on the petitions within three months. Hearings formally began on September 29, progressing in batches until wrapping up this Wednesday.

This development is likely to intensify scrutiny over political defections in the state. With the Speaker now under judicial watch, a swift decision seems inevitable. The outcome could set a precedent for similar cases nationwide, especially at a time when anti-defection laws are being debated for stricter enforcement.

If the Speaker proceeds with disqualification, it may alter the political balance ahead of upcoming local body elections. For now, all eyes are on whether Nagender and Srihari comply before the deadline.
