SRK & Kajol Celebrate Global Milestone as DDLJ Joins Leicester Square Film Legends

London added a touch of Bollywood magic on Thursday as Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol unveiled a life-sized statue inspired by their legendary film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at Leicester Square. The sculpture depicting Raj holding an umbrella over Simran now stands alongside tributes to cinematic icons such as Harry Potter, Paddington and Mary Poppins, making DDLJ the first Indian film commemorated on the renowned ‘Scenes in the Square’ trail.

Shah Rukh Khan marked the occasion with a nostalgic nod to the film’s timeless dialogue, saying that sometimes “small things happen in big countries,” calling the recognition a proud and exhilarating moment for Indian cinema. Kajol echoed the sentiment, noting how extraordinary it is for a 1995 love story to find a permanent place in one of the world’s most celebrated film districts.

Nearly three decades after its release, DDLJ continues to enjoy daily screenings in Mumbai, and the statue now cements its imprint on global film history.

The installation highlights not only the film’s enduring cultural influence but also Bollywood’s expanding global footprint. For London’s tourism and South Asian diaspora, the statue is likely to become a new landmark, further blending Indian storytelling into mainstream international cinema spaces. It also signals increasing recognition of non-Western films in global cultural trails traditionally dominated by Hollywood.
