Rahul Gandhi to Visit Assam, Pay Tribute to Zubeen Garg Amid Public Outcry for Justice
Rahul Gandhi will visit Assam to honor late singer Zubeen Garg as the state continues to mourn his loss. Gaurav Gogoi calls for calm, urging a fair probe amid rising tensions and protests.
Amid grief and growing unrest in Assam, Rahul Gandhi is set to visit the state on October 17 to pay his respects to the late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. According to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gandhi will arrive in Guwahati and proceed to Sonapur, where the artist was laid to rest. He will offer floral tributes at the memorial and meet the bereaved family to convey his condolences.
Party officials said all arrangements are in place for a quiet and dignified homage. The Congress described Gandhi’s visit as a reflection of the deep emotional bond that Assamese people share with Zubeen, whose music and activism transcended generations.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed alarm over the violence that erupted outside Baksa District Jail, where the accused in Garg’s death case were brought under police escort. Gogoi appealed for restraint, emphasizing that “justice can only be achieved through legal means” and warning against acts of retaliation or mob unrest.
He criticized law enforcement agencies for their failure to anticipate the violence and condemned attacks on journalists covering the incident, including the torching of a media vehicle. Gogoi urged authorities to ensure media safety and restore calm, stressing that “violence only delays justice.”
Following the clashes, prohibitory orders were imposed under Section 163 of the BNSS, as the district administration sought to contain escalating tensions.
Analysis:
Rahul Gandhi’s visit arrives at a moment of emotional intensity in Assam, where Zubeen Garg’s death has sparked both mourning and anger. His presence could help redirect public sentiment toward peaceful expression and dialogue. However, the government’s immediate challenge lies in rebuilding trust — ensuring a transparent investigation while safeguarding law and order. For citizens, patience and vigilance will be key as the legal process unfolds.
