Rahul Gandhi questions the India-US trade deal following a US Supreme Court ruling on Trump-era tariffs, alleging risks to farmers and key sectors.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to withdraw the recently announced India-US trade agreement, citing concerns over its implications for farmers, small industries and data protection.

Addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi argued that the agreement—announced on February 2—was concluded without adequate consultation and under pressure from former US President Donald Trump. He claimed the pact could expose Indian agriculture and the garment sector to unfair competition while raising questions about data security safeguards.

His remarks come days after the US Supreme Court struck down broad tariff measures introduced by Trump on February 20, terming them an overreach. Despite the ruling, Trump has indicated that the India agreement remains intact and signalled plans for fresh global tariffs in the range of 10–15%.

Farmer groups have echoed apprehensions, warning that cheaper imports from the US could disrupt domestic markets. The Centre, however, has stated that it is studying the court’s decision and has not indicated any move to cancel the agreement. Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is currently on medical rest following surgery, amid intensifying political exchanges.

The debate underscores how trade policy has become a political flashpoint ahead of key electoral battles. For farmers and small manufacturers, clarity on tariff structures and safeguards will be crucial in the weeks ahead, as uncertainty can directly impact pricing and investment decisions.
