Rahul Gandhi Attends Kerala Event Marking 100 Years of Gandhi–Narayana Guru Dialogue
Rahul Gandhi joins a public meeting in Kollam to commemorate the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s historic 1925 interaction with Sree Narayana Guru.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday participated in a public programme in Kollam, Kerala, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the historic meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and social reformer Sree Narayana Guru in 1925.
The event was held at Ashramam Ground and organised in association with the Sivagiri Mutt. It marks a century since the interaction in which Guru is believed to have told Gandhi that there was “no caste here,” during discussions on social reform, untouchability and non-violence.
Rahul Gandhi addressed the gathering in the morning before proceeding to Marian College, where he was scheduled to interact with students. The commemorative event drew large crowds, reflecting the enduring influence of Narayana Guru’s teachings on equality and social justice in Kerala.
Political observers note that the programme also carries electoral significance, as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) seeks to strengthen its outreach among the Ezhava community. Organisers reportedly kept the event focused and limited in scale to accommodate other campaign activities planned for the day.
Beyond politics, the centenary offers a reminder of the historical role reform movements played in shaping Kerala’s progressive social landscape. The dialogue between Gandhi and Narayana Guru continues to resonate as debates on equality and social inclusion remain relevant even today.
