Priyanka Gandhi in Assam to Lead Congress Candidate Screening for 2026 Assembly Polls
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will chair the Congress screening committee in Guwahati as the party prepares for Assam Assembly elections due in 2026, with voter rolls finalized for 2.49 crore electors.
With the Assam Assembly’s term set to conclude on May 20, 2026, the Congress has intensified preparations for elections expected in March or April. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is scheduled to visit Guwahati to head the party’s screening committee, a crucial step in shortlisting candidates.
At the state party headquarters, she will interact with district presidents, block-level leaders and members of the election committee to gather ground-level inputs before finalising nominations. The exercise follows a grassroots consultation drive initiated by AICC in-charge Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, aimed at strengthening local feedback in ticket distribution.
Party sources indicate that the first list of candidates could be released before the end of the month, signalling an early push to consolidate organisational readiness.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has completed a review of poll preparedness in the state. Electoral rolls have been finalised for approximately 2.495 crore voters, with arrangements spanning more than 28,000 polling stations. The Commission has reiterated its commitment to conducting the election in a free and impartial manner.
For Congress, candidate selection will be pivotal in a politically competitive state where local dynamics often outweigh national narratives. Early clarity on nominees may help the party build momentum, but sustained booth-level coordination will ultimately determine electoral gains.
