PM Modi Unhappy with Telangana BJP's Performance, Flags Weak Digital Strategy and Missed Opportunities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly voiced strong dissatisfaction with the BJP’s progress in Telangana, particularly criticizing the party’s sluggish social media presence and weak opposition role when compared to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

According to reports, Modi delivered this sharp feedback during an informal breakfast interaction on Thursday, December 11, with MPs from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands at Parliament House. The Prime Minister is said to have spent nearly 30 minutes reviewing political developments and advising legislators on how to strengthen their conduct and outreach.

Modi’s Concern: BJP Losing Online Ground to Owaisi

Focusing on Telangana, Modi is reported to have questioned why the party has failed to build a strong digital and communications team, noting that Owaisi’s online influence continues to dominate political conversations in the state.

As per Eenadu, Modi told MPs they had not risen to the expectations of a “strong and assertive opposition,” and criticised them for not leveraging political openings that could boost the BJP’s footprint in Telangana.

Call for Greater Visibility and Engagement

Modi also urged MPs from Telugu-speaking states to be more vocal on national issues and travel widely to communicate the Centre’s policies and development initiatives. The Prime Minister reportedly stressed that visibility, consistent messaging, and grassroots engagement were essential for the BJP’s growth in southern states.

Mahbubnagar MP D.K. Aruna later confirmed that Modi instructed Telangana BJP parliamentarians to work collectively to strengthen the party’s presence and carry its message deeper into the state.

The remarks underscore the BJP’s strategic concern over its stagnant presence in Telangana at a time when Congress is gaining rural momentum and AIMIM maintains strong urban influence. By calling out digital underperformance, Modi is signalling that modern political battles are increasingly fought online and the BJP cannot afford to fall behind.

If party MPs act on this reprimand, Telangana could witness a sharper, more aggressive BJP presence ahead of crucial local body elections and future Assembly contests.
