PM Narendra Modi paid homage to the martyrs of the Assam Agitation at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, recalling the historic movement that ended in 1985.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the martyrs of the historic Assam Agitation at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, remembering those who lost their lives during the six-year-long movement that concluded in 1985.
During his visit, the Prime Minister offered floral respects before the eternal flame that commemorates the 860 martyrs of the agitation. He also walked through the memorial complex and viewed the gallery displaying busts of those who sacrificed their lives for the cause.
Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and Assam Accord Implementation Minister Atul Bora accompanied the Prime Minister. The memorial, inaugurated earlier this month, also marks the legacy of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first martyr of the movement.
Officials said the Prime Minister sought detailed information about the agitation and its martyrs, describing the visit as a significant moment for Assam’s collective memory. The Assam Agitation ultimately led to the signing of the Assam Accord on August 15, 1985, a milestone in the state’s political history. The Prime Minister’s visit places national attention on a movement that continues to shape Assam’s politics and identity. By formally honoring the martyrs, the Centre signals renewed emphasis on historical grievances linked to immigration and regional rights—issues that still resonate strongly in the state’s public discourse.
