Owaisi Joins JPC Reviewing Bills to Disqualify PM, CMs and Ministers After Arrest
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi appointed to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee examining contentious bills that seek automatic removal of arrested ministers and top executives.
AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has been named to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) that will review a set of controversial bills proposing the removal of any Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or Minister if detained for 30 consecutive days for an offence punishable by five or more years in prison.
The 31-member JPC, chaired by Aparajita Sarangi, will examine three key legislations the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill. These bills, introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Monsoon Session, triggered widespread opposition protests.
Owaisi has sharply criticised the proposals, calling them “anti-democratic” and warning that they would undermine India’s constitutional structure by giving excessive power to enforcement agencies. The Winter Session of Parliament, where further deliberations are expected, begins on December 1.
Analysis: Owaisi’s inclusion in the committee ensures that dissenting voices find representation in reviewing these high-stakes reforms. The debate reflects a larger national concern balancing accountability of public officials with protection against political misuse of law. For Hyderabad and beyond, his participation keeps alive the conversation on democratic safeguards in legislative processes.
