INDIA bloc MPs move a rare no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging bias and repeated interruptions of opposition leaders.

A heated political confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha after opposition parties moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla, an unusual step that underscores rising tensions inside Parliament.

The motion was initiated by Congress MP Mohammed Jawed and supported by 118 members from the INDIA bloc. Opposition leaders alleged that the Speaker had repeatedly interrupted or muted microphones during speeches by opposition figures, including Rahul Gandhi, and had failed to take adequate action over controversial remarks made by a BJP lawmaker against another MP.

The debate quickly escalated into a shouting match across party lines. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra praised Rahul Gandhi’s persistence in raising issues inside the House, describing his approach as consistent over more than a decade in public life.

Members of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), however, rejected the accusations and defended the Speaker’s conduct. They characterised the motion as a political stunt aimed at gaining media attention rather than addressing parliamentary procedure.

Amid the uproar, proceedings were briefly adjourned before resuming the next day. The BJP issued a three-line whip directing its MPs to remain present in the House as the confrontation continued.

No-confidence motions against a sitting Speaker are rare in India’s parliamentary history, which makes the development politically significant. Analysts note that the episode reflects the deepening friction between the government and opposition ahead of crucial legislative debates in the ongoing session.
