West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee says her government will not allow interference with Waqf properties or religious places amid controversy over the amended law.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday reiterated that her government would not permit any action affecting Waqf properties or places of worship in the state. Speaking at a public gathering in Barjora, Bankura district, she said safeguarding religious institutions remains a firm commitment of her administration.

Her remarks come against the backdrop of nationwide tensions following the implementation of the amended Waqf law earlier this year. The legislation has drawn objections from several opposition parties, including the ruling Trinamool Congress, with certain provisions subsequently stayed by the Supreme Court of India. Banerjee stressed that her government does not engage in religious politics and would ensure that temples, mosques, and churches remain protected.

The Chief Minister also alluded to unrest reported in parts of the country, including pockets of West Bengal such as Murshidabad, following the law’s enactment, underlining the need for calm and constitutional safeguards.

Analysis: With religious property emerging as a sensitive national issue, Banerjee’s assurance is aimed at reassuring minority communities and maintaining social stability in the state. For citizens, closely tracking legal developments and court rulings will be crucial resulting in clarity on implementation.
