Kodangal Dargah Demolition Sparks Protests, Police Detain Several Youth
Protests erupted in Kodangal after the demolition of a dargah and graveyard for road works. Police detained several young men and opposition leaders, drawing criticism of the Telangana government.
Tension gripped Kodangal on Sunday as police detained several young Muslim men protesting the demolition of a dargah and graveyard for road widening. Visuals showed protestors being forcefully taken away in police vehicles and shifted to different stations.
AIMIM’s Vikarabad joint secretary Gulshan was among those detained, while MBT leader Amjedullah Khan was stopped on his way to Kodangal and held at Chengamul. He lashed out at the Congress-led state government, accusing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of targeting the Muslim community.
Police claimed the detentions were preventive, saying no formal cases were filed and that the leaders would be released soon. However, the crackdown has drawn sharp criticism, with opposition voices warning that such actions could deepen distrust between the government and minority communities.
Demolitions of religious structures, especially without community consensus, often create unrest. Instead of detentions, the government could have avoided confrontation by holding talks with locals and ensuring sensitive handling. Heavy-handed policing risks alienating people and worsening political fallout.
