Jagan Cautions Naidu: Protect Andhra’s Share of Krishna River Water Amid Tribunal Hearings
Former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy urges Chandrababu Naidu to safeguard Andhra Pradesh’s rights over Krishna river water ahead of tribunal proceedings, warning of serious consequences if Telangana’s claims are
In a strongly worded letter to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has called on the TDP-led NDA government to urgently safeguard Andhra Pradesh’s stake in Krishna river waters. His appeal comes ahead of upcoming hearings before the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal-II, where Telangana is seeking allocation of 763 TMC of dependable water.
Jagan cautioned that conceding to Telangana’s demand would cause “severe injustice” to Andhra Pradesh and said the state must present its case with utmost clarity. He accused Naidu of past negligence over similar issues, including permitting Karnataka to raise the Almatti dam height and allegedly compromising Andhra’s water rights in 2014.
Analysis: The renewed focus on water share reflects deeper political tensions between Andhra and Telangana. With irrigation central to AP’s agrarian economy, experts say any misstep at the tribunal could directly impact farmers and future water security. Opposition pressure may push the ruling government to adopt a firmer legal stance.
Jagan further warned that even “losing one TMC of the 512 TMC allocated by the Bachawat Tribunal” would hold the government accountable.
As the hearing approaches, the dispute has now taken centre stage in Andhra politics — not just as a water battle, but as a test of political responsibility.
