Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet report delays and cancellations after Iran shut its airspace amid protests and rising tensions with the US.

International air travel faced fresh disruption on January 15 after Iran shut its airspace to commercial aircraft, impacting several flights operated by Indian carriers. Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet confirmed that some of their overseas services were affected by the sudden restriction.

Air India said it had proactively informed passengers about possible delays and cancellations, explaining that flights passing over the region are being diverted through alternative routes in the interest of safety. Where rerouting is not feasible, services have been cancelled. The airline advised travellers to check flight status before leaving for the airport, stressing that passenger and crew safety remains its highest priority.

IndiGo also acknowledged operational challenges, noting that certain international flights were impacted due to the closure of Iranian airspace. The airline said its teams are working to assist customers and provide the best available alternatives.

The airspace shutdown comes as Iran extended restrictions on civilian aviation amid ongoing anti-government protests and heightened tensions with the United States, though no official explanation was issued for the move.

The development highlights how geopolitical tensions can quickly disrupt global aviation networks, even for flights not landing in the affected country. Passengers on long-haul routes should allow extra buffer time and monitor airline updates closely. For airlines, repeated airspace closures mean higher fuel costs and scheduling pressure, which could translate into continued disruptions if the situation persists.
