Harish Rao Flags ‘Illegal’ Remark in Phone Tapping Probe, Seeks Clarity from Hyderabad CP
BRS MLA Harish Rao has questioned Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar’s use of the term “illegal” in the phone tapping case, alleging prejudice while the probe is still underway.
Hyderabad: Senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader and Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao has raised objections to a remark made by Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, questioning the use of the word illegal” to describe the phone tapping case that is still under investigation.
Responding to a post on social media by Sajjanar who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) Harish Rao asked how any act could be labelled illegal before a court delivers a verdict. He argued that such wording reflects a pre-judged mindset and undermines the principle of due process.
Citing Article 21 of the Constitution, Rao said criminal allegations cannot be treated as offences until judicially established. He further contended that public statements by senior officers must adhere to neutrality and restraint as mandated under the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, stressing that investigations must not only be fair but also appear fair to maintain public confidence.
The reaction followed Sajjanar’s post stating that questioning of K Chandrashekhar Rao had concluded in the “illegal phone tapping case.” KCR appeared before the SIT on February 1 and was examined at his residence, accompanied by family members and party leaders.
Analysis: The exchange highlights the growing friction between the opposition and investigating agencies in politically sensitive cases. In high-profile probes, even terminology can become contentious, reinforcing the need for cautious public communication while inquiries are ongoing.
