Harish Rao Accuses Congress of Twisting Telangana Power Policy for Electoral Gains
BRS leader Harish Rao accuses Congress of misrepresenting Telangana’s free power scheme for farmers, calling it political hypocrisy ahead of elections.
Senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of misleading farmers by projecting free electricity as a new promise while ignoring Telangana’s existing record.
Harish Rao said uninterrupted free power for agriculture has been in place since January 1, 2018, under the previous BRS government led by K. Chandrashekar Rao. He argued that the policy ensured round-the-clock electricity to farmers and became a cornerstone of Telangana’s farm support system.
Taking aim at the current Congress leadership, Rao pointed out that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had earlier questioned the need for 24-hour supply, reportedly arguing that limited hours of power were sufficient for agriculture. He alleged that the Congress has now reversed its position and is attempting to showcase the same scheme as its own achievement.
According to Rao, this shift exposes what he called political inconsistency and opportunism. He claimed the Congress is using Telangana’s past initiatives to craft campaign narratives in other states, without acknowledging their origins.
The dispute highlights how welfare measures often become contested political currency during elections. For farmers, the larger concern remains policy continuity and reliable implementation, regardless of which party claims credit. As campaigns intensify, voters may increasingly scrutinise whether promises reflect new commitments or recycled achievements.
