Free Us from Floods Hyderabad Residents Slam Govt Over Encroachments
Hyderabad residents slam Telangana govt, GHMC, and HYDRAA over nala encroachments and flood mismanagement during Prajavani.
Hyderabad Citizens across the city voiced anger at the Telangana government and civic bodies during the latest Prajavani grievance hearings, accusing authorities of ignoring illegal encroachments that worsen flooding every monsoon. HYDRAA and GHMC together received more than 120 petitions on Monday, with complaints ranging from inundated colonies to reduced park space.
In Jalpally, residents alleged that the narrowing of a nala beside Masjid-E-Quba had caused rainwater to enter the mosque and nearby homes. Similar stories came from Begumpet’s Methodist Colony, where locals said encroachments along the drainage channel had left 660 households repeatedly flooded. At Pocharam, citizens pointed to a major road junction that turns into a lake because of private construction over the nala.
Others complained that land reserved for parks in Chandanagar had been illegally occupied, depriving over 3,000 families of open space. Despite urgent appeals, people say the government has dragged its feet, allowing builders and vested interests to disrupt natural water flow and public amenities.
Analysis: These recurring grievances highlight a chronic governance failure—officials pledge to address flooding each year, yet encroachments remain untouched. Residents argue that until accountability is enforced, Hyderabad’s urban planning will remain hostage to short-term interests at the cost of public safety.
