Former CM KCR Summoned by Telangana SIT in Phone Tapping Investigation
Former Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao has been summoned by the police SIT for questioning in the phone tapping case, with the inquiry scheduled at his Erravalli residence on January 30.
Hyderabad: The Telangana Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has issued a notice to K Chandrashekar Rao, asking him to appear for questioning on January 30 in connection with the high-profile phone tapping case.
Citing the former chief minister’s age, the SIT informed Rao that the questioning would take place at his Erravalli farmhouse in Siddipet from 3 pm onwards, instead of the Jubilee Hills police station in Hyderabad. The nine-member SIT is led by Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar and was constituted after the Indian National Congress assumed power in the state.
Several senior leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi have already been questioned in recent weeks, including working president KT Rama Rao, Siddipet MLA Harish Rao, and former Rajya Sabha MP Joginpally Santosh Rao. The party has dismissed the probe as politically motivated, accusing the government led by Revanth Reddy of using it as a distraction from governance issues.
The case relates to allegations that phone conversations of more than 600 individuals—including Opposition leaders, judges, journalists and public figures—were illegally monitored during the decade-long BRS rule, particularly around the 2023 Assembly elections. The first FIR was registered on March 10, 2024, soon after the change of government. Former intelligence chief T Prabhakar Rao has already been questioned, while four police officials, including a suspended DSP, were arrested earlier and later granted bail.
Analysis: The decision to question KCR marks a significant escalation in the probe, bringing the investigation directly to the former chief minister’s doorstep. As the case moves higher up the political ladder, its outcome could shape the tone of Telangana’s political discourse in the months ahead.
