Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani’s family expresses disappointment after BJP reportedly refused to bear his funeral costs, saying it reflects poorly on the party’s respect for loyal leaders.

Ahmedabad: The family of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has voiced deep disappointment after reports emerged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) declined to cover the expenses of his final rites. Rupani, who lost his life in the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad, had devoted decades to serving the party and the public.

According to family members, nearly ₹25 lakh was spent on the funeral arrangements. However, when the bill was forwarded to the BJP, the party allegedly refused to settle it and asked that the cost be borne by the family instead. The family clarified that they are financially secure and not seeking help, but expressed dismay that the party did not consider it a matter of dignity and respect to bear the costs of its veteran leader’s last journey.

They noted that Rupani’s commitment to the BJP was lifelong, and such an attitude sends a disheartening message. “It is not about the money—it is about the value the party places on those who worked selflessly for it,” they remarked.

Analysis:
The issue raises larger questions about how political parties treat their leaders after their passing. While families may not require financial assistance, symbolic gestures such as covering funeral expenses can serve as a mark of gratitude and respect. In a state like Gujarat, where loyalty to the BJP runs deep, the matter may spark debate on how much importance the party gives to honoring its senior figures beyond their active years.
