DMK asks alliance partners to accept seat-sharing formula by March 23 as negotiations with VCK, CPI(M), DMDK and MNM remain unresolved ahead of Assembly elections.

With Assembly elections around the corner, the DMK has tightened its stance on seat-sharing, asking allies to finalise arrangements by March 23 or risk delays in the coalition’s election preparations.

The ultimatum comes amid ongoing negotiations with key partners such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI(M) and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), none of whom have yet agreed to the proposed formula. The lack of consensus has added strain within the alliance as the nomination process draws closer.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan has openly expressed dissatisfaction, indicating that the current offer falls short of expectations. Meanwhile, CPI(M) leaders are holding internal discussions before taking a final call, and DMDK has maintained that talks are still underway.

Adding to the complexity, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) led by Kamal Haasan has refused to contest under the alliance symbol, insisting on retaining its own identity. This has forced the DMK to weigh its options carefully as it attempts to keep the coalition intact.

Despite the friction, sources suggest that backchannel discussions continue, with the possibility of a last-minute compromise still alive. However, with the April 23 polls approaching, time pressure is now a decisive factor.

Seat-sharing disputes are common in coalition politics, but delays can impact campaign momentum and voter messaging. For the DMK-led front, reaching a quick consensus could be crucial to presenting a united front in a tightly contested election.
