DK Shivakumar stresses the power of keeping promises in a subtle message to Congress leadership, hinting at pressure over the Karnataka CM succession issue.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president DK Shivakumar on Thursday made a pointed observation perceived as a message to the party high command, amid growing speculation over a possible change in chief ministership. Speaking at a public event, he said, “Words hold immense power, but keeping a promise is even more powerful. That should always be respected.”

During his address, Shivakumar subtly referenced the symbolic importance of leadership positions, joking that those standing behind him “do not understand the value of a chair” and “choose to stand despite having seats available,” drawing laughter from the crowd. The remark has been widely interpreted as a dig at ongoing political manoeuvring within the state leadership.

Rumours of a succession agreement—allegedly committing to replace Chief Minister Siddaramaiah halfway through the term—have intensified. While Shivakumar’s supporters reportedly visited Delhi recently to lobby for him, the Deputy CM has publicly denied directly seeking the top post, saying he would not weaken the party. The final decision, both factions agree, rests with the high command.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has stated that the matter will be resolved jointly with Rahul and Sonia Gandhi.

Shivakumar’s carefully worded remarks indicate mounting internal pressure without outright confrontation, signalling strategic positioning rather than public rebellion. His emphasis on “promise-keeping” could resonate with cadres ahead of local body polls, while subtly reinforcing his claim without violating party discipline. Observers suggest that how Congress handles this transition may influence its credibility and cohesion before the 2026 elections.
