DK Shivakumar defends Bengaluru’s anti-encroachment demolition drive, calling it a precautionary measure to protect public health and safety.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on December 28 sought to clarify the rationale behind the recent demolition drive in parts of Bengaluru, terming it a preventive step taken in the interest of public health and safety. He stated that the cleared structures in Kogilu Fakir Layout and Waseem Layout were located on encroached land previously used as a waste dumping site and quarry pit.

Responding to criticism, Shivakumar said the action was not aimed at any specific community. He alleged that land mafias had illegally developed unsafe land into slum clusters, exposing residents to serious risks while complicating urban planning and civic management.

Analysis: The episode highlights the growing challenge of regulating land use in rapidly expanding cities like Bengaluru. While safety-driven enforcement is essential, consistent policy communication and safeguards for affected residents will shape public trust going forward.
