AIMIM to Enter Bengal Polls in Alliance with Humayun Kabir’s AJUP
Asaduddin Owaisi announces AIMIM’s alliance with Humayun Kabir’s AJUP for West Bengal Assembly elections; details to be revealed in Kolkata on March 25.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has announced its entry into the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections through an alliance with Humayun Kabir’s Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP).
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said a joint press conference with Kabir will be held in Kolkata on March 25 to outline the alliance’s strategy and seat-sharing details. The move signals AIMIM’s continued efforts to expand its political footprint beyond its traditional strongholds.
AJUP founder Humayun Kabir, a former Trinamool Congress leader, has already indicated that his party plans to contest a significant number of seats, with AIMIM expected to field candidates in a limited segment of constituencies as part of the alliance.
West Bengal, which has 294 Assembly seats, is set to go to polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4. The primary contest is expected between the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Political observers say smaller alliances like this could influence vote shares in closely contested constituencies, even if they do not emerge as dominant players. Their impact will likely depend on how effectively they mobilise local support and position themselves within Bengal’s complex electoral dynamics.
